[Album Review] Seu Jorge – The Other Side

Depois de décadas a atravessar samba, soul, funk, MPB e cinema com uma naturalidade rara, Seu Jorge continua a fazer aquilo que sempre o distinguiu: transformar canções simples em algo profundamente humano.

O seu novo álbum: The Other Side, demorou cerca de 16 anos a ser desenvolvido, tendo sido gravado de forma fragmentada entre 2009 e 2018, longe da lógica tradicional de pressão comercial e ciclos rápidos da indústria. O próprio Seu Jorge disse que este é “talvez o disco que melhor explique o que é o Seu Jorge”.

Musicalmente, o álbum afasta-se bastante do lado mais expansivo e popular de discos como Músicas Para Churrasco ou Baile à la Baiana. Em vez disso, entra num território muito mais contemplativo, mais próximo da bossa nova.

A produção ficou a cargo de Mario Caldato Jr., colaborador histórico de Seu Jorge desde Samba Esporte Fino, enquanto os arranjos orquestrais são assinados por Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. O resultado é um disco cheio de espaço e atmosferas muito mais delicadas do que aquilo que normalmente associamos ao artista.

Também há participações fortes, como Marisa Monte, Maria Rita, Beck e Zap Mama. Aqui, mesmo quando se canta sobre amor, saudade ou reencontro, transmite-se quase sempre uma sensação de conversa real, sem excesso poético artificial.

Neste trabalho, em vez de surgir principalmente como compositor/personagem carismático, Seu Jorge aparece muito mais como intérprete. Há menos procura de hits imediatos e mais preocupação com textura e beleza sonora.

No fundo, The Other Side soa quase como o contrário da imagem pública mais conhecida de Seu Jorge: menos festa, menos groove expansivo, menos samba de rua, e mais silêncio, detalhe e maturidade.
