[New Album] TURSTILE – NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS

Há bandas que mudam de género musical. E há bandas que parecem ter deixado de acreditar que os géneros servem para alguma coisa. Os Turnstile pertencem cada vez mais ao segundo grupo.

Depois de NEVER ENOUGH, o álbum de 2025 que confirmou definitivamente que aquilo que começou no hardcore de Baltimore já não cabia dentro das fronteiras do hardcore, os Turnstile regressam agora ao mesmo disco para fazer algo talvez ainda mais revelador: entregá-lo a outros. NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS não funciona propriamente como uma simples colecção de remisturas, nem como um tradicional álbum de versões. É antes uma espécie de universo paralelo onde as mesmas canções são desmontadas e reconstruídas por músicos que, à partida, dificilmente encontraríamos todos dentro do mesmo disco.

E talvez seja precisamente essa a melhor definição dos Turnstile actuais.

Porque poucas bandas poderiam colocar Dying Fetus, Elton John, Four Tet, Hayley Williams, Blood Orange, Slayyyter, Panda Bear, Alex G, Oklou ou Julien Baker no mesmo projecto sem que a lista parecesse uma provocação ou um exercício de marketing. Aqui, estranhamente, faz sentido. Não porque estes artistas tenham muito em comum entre si, mas porque todos parecem encontrar alguma coisa diferente dentro da música dos Turnstile.

É isso que torna NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS particularmente interessante. Não estamos apenas a ouvir novas roupagens para canções conhecidas. Estamos a perceber até onde essas canções conseguem viajar sem perder completamente a sua identidade.

“BIRDS” talvez seja o exemplo mais radical. Slayyyter empurra-a para um território electrónico, distorcido e quase hipnótico; os Dying Fetus fazem exactamente o contrário e devolvem-lhe violência comprimindo a canção numa descarga de death metal com menos de dois minutos. A mesma composição torna-se duas coisas praticamente incompatíveis.

Four Tet pega em “LOOK OUT FOR ME” e transforma a urgência dos Turnstile numa viagem electrónica de seis minutos, Oklou dissolve “LIGHT DESIGN” numa atmosfera quase líquida e Blood Orange encontra outra possibilidade para a mesma música.

Depois há encontros que parecem existir precisamente porque ninguém os teria previsto. Elton John surge em “SEEIN’ STARS”. Hayley Williams entra em “CEILING”. Panda Bear reimagina “MAGIC MAN”, enquanto Alex G apresenta outra leitura da mesma canção. Shabaka entra em “SLOWDIVE”. Mustafa e Julien Baker encontram-se em “TIME IS HAPPENING”.

Durante anos discutiu-se se os Turnstile ainda eram hardcore, se tinham ficado demasiado grandes, demasiado melódicos, demasiado acessíveis ou demasiado próximos do mainstream. A resposta da banda parece ser deixar de responder. Em vez de escolher um lado, convidaram todos para dentro da mesma sala.

E o resultado é deliciosamente contraditório. Death metal pode viver ao lado de electrónica. Hardcore pode encontrar jazz. Elton John pode aparecer algumas faixas antes de Dying Fetus. NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS acaba assim por funcionar menos como extensão de um álbum e mais como demonstração de uma ideia que os Turnstile perseguem há vários anos: a música torna-se muito mais interessante quando deixamos de lhe perguntar onde pertence. Deixar fluir o Ecletismo sonoro será sempre uma mais valia e algo que tornará inevitavelmente quem o permite em alguem mais rico.

No domingo, os Turnstile estarão no Meo Kalorama, em Lisboa e o mosh pit será gigante e cheio de esperança de que é possível viver momentos de catarse coletiva.
