[Album Review] The Haunted Youth – Boys Cry Too

Os The Haunted Youth construíram uma identidade muito própria dentro da nova dream pop europeia. O projeto liderado por Joachim Liebens rapidamente passou de fenómeno underground belga para um dos nomes mais fortes da nova vaga shoegaze/dream pop, especialmente depois do impacto do álbum Dawn of the Freak em 2022. O novo álbum “Boys Cry Too” continua exatamente essa linha emocional, mas de forma mais direta do que habitual.

O título já aponta claramente para uma rejeição da ideia tradicional de masculinidade emocionalmente fechada.

Isso encaixa completamente na escrita de Joachim Liebens, que ao longo dos últimos anos falou várias vezes sobre depressão, ansiedade e isolamento como temas centrais do projeto. Em muitas músicas dos The Haunted Youth existe sempre esta tensão entre desejo de proximidade emocional e incapacidade de comunicar plenamente aquilo que se sente.

Lançado pela Play It Again Sam, o segundo álbum da banda belga mostra um projeto muito mais consciente da própria identidade, sendo que a própria banda descreveu o disco como nascido de “emotional unrest”, afastando-se da fragilidade bedroom pop do primeiro álbum para algo mais confrontacional.

Grande parte do disco gira em torno de masculinidade emocional, saúde mental, paranoia, vulnerabilidade e isolamento. Liebens explicou mesmo que a primeira metade do álbum representa o lado mais defensivo e agressivo de um homem emocionalmente destruído, enquanto a segunda mergulha na vulnerabilidade pura.

Um disco muito interessante que vive melhor se for ouvido sem tentar parecer “cool” e simplesmente aceitando o excesso emocional que o define. Porque é aí que os The Haunted Youth encontram identidade própria: na capacidade de transformar ansiedade, vulnerabilidade masculina e desgaste emocional em algo melodicamente bonito sem perder completamente a aspereza por trás dessas emoções.
